The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2017 to be announced on April 4th

The announcement of the 2017 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) takes place Tuesday April 4th 1:00 pm CET at the National Library in Stockholm. Alice Bah Kuhnke, Minister for Culture and Democracy in Sweden is giving a speech and Jury Chairman Boel Westin will announce the laureate of 2017.

The announcement will be followed by a presentation of the laureate by the jury.

The press conference will be broadcast live on www.alma.se and via a link to Bologna Children’s Book Fair, the leading international book fair for children and young people.

ALMA rewards authors, illustrators, storytellers and reading promoting individuals and organisations. For this year’s award, 226 candidates from 60 countries are nominated. The list of nominated candidates is available here.

The award, which amounts to SEK 5 million, is given annually to a single laureate or to several. Authors, illustrators, oral storytellers and reading promoters are eligible. The award is designed to promote interest in children’s and young adult literature. The UN convention of rights of the child is the foundation of our work. An expert jury selects the laureate(s) from candidates nominated by institutions and organisations all over the world. The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award was founded by the Swedish government in 2002 and is administrated by the Swedish Arts Council.

Barbro Lindgren to Vimmerby, Stockholm and Umeå

The award week for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) begins on May 25. During a week this year’s laureate, the Swedish author Barbro Lindgren, will participate in a tailored program to meet with the public, press and reading promoters. The program includes two intensive days in Vimmerby and meetings in Stockholm and Umeå.

– We hope that as many people as possible can take part in this year’s award week, says Director Helen Sigeland. We are particularly happy that this year’s award week includes Umeå, the 2014 European Capital of Culture. Barbro Lindgren will visit Café Pilgatan in Umeå, which is known for it´s reading promotion activities.

On March 25 it was announced that Barbro Lindgren is the first Swedish laureate ever,. She is one of Sweden’s most beloved authors with innovative and multifaceted works for children of all ages. Her production includes picture books, poetry, plays and books for children and young adults.

May 26   Visit to Astrid Lindgren’s childhood home Näs

May 27   Visit to the Astrid Lindgren School in Vimmerby, meeting with participants at the Astrid Lindgren Conference

May 28   Meeting with children at Kulturhuset (House of Culture) in Stockholm

May 28   Public conversation with a member of the ALMA-jury at Kulturhuset

May 31   Program at Café Pilgatan in Umeå

June 2  Award Ceremony, Stockholm Concert Hall

Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2014 to be announced 25 March

The laureate of the 2014 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) will be announced at the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm on 25 March at 1 pm. The introductory speeches will be given by Kerstin Brunnberg, Chair of the Swedish Arts Council, and Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Sweden’s Minister for Culture.

This year’s award has drawn 238 nominations from 68 countries. The laureate or laureates – chosen from the nominated authors, illustrators, oral storytellers, reading promoters and reading promotion Groups – will be announced as usual by Larry Lempert, Chairman of the ALMA jury.

The press conference will be relayed live from the National Library to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

– We are looking forward to hosting the announcement of this internationally significant news right here at the National Library, says Gunilla Herdenberg, the library’s Executive Director. The award puts children’s and young adult literature in the global spotlight, along with reading promotion, which is an important issue in contemporary society. It will be really exciting to be there when the jury announces this year’s laureate.
