Behind the scenes of this year’s announcement

Get behind the scenes of the announcement of this year’s laureate. The announcement took place at a press conference at the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm on March 25 and was streamed live to the international Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Italy. The video was broadcast for the first time a the Award Ceremony on June 2, 2014.

Today we pack our bags and go back to Stockholm. It´s been (as usual) a fantastic week at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, meeting representatives from the book industry, nominating bodies and, last but not least, announcing this year’s laureate Barbro Lindgren. Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2014 to be announced 25 March

The laureate of the 2014 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) will be announced at the National Library of Sweden in Stockholm on 25 March at 1 pm. The introductory speeches will be given by Kerstin Brunnberg, Chair of the Swedish Arts Council, and Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth, Sweden’s Minister for Culture.

This year’s award has drawn 238 nominations from 68 countries. The laureate or laureates – chosen from the nominated authors, illustrators, oral storytellers, reading promoters and reading promotion Groups – will be announced as usual by Larry Lempert, Chairman of the ALMA jury.

The press conference will be relayed live from the National Library to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair.

– We are looking forward to hosting the announcement of this internationally significant news right here at the National Library, says Gunilla Herdenberg, the library’s Executive Director. The award puts children’s and young adult literature in the global spotlight, along with reading promotion, which is an important issue in contemporary society. It will be really exciting to be there when the jury announces this year’s laureate.

After the announcement, a jury member will give a presentation on the laureate(s). Follow the press conference live at http://www.alma.se, starting at 12:50 pm Central European Time (GMT+1).

Do not miss this spring’s key dates for the ALMA.

March 25

Announcement of the 2014 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award laureate(s) at the National Library of Sweden at 1:00 pm CET. The announcement is broadcast live on www.alma.se/en and streamed live to the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, Italy.

March 27

A presentation of the laureate at the Swedish Institute for Children’s Books in Stockholm. Open to the public. Admission free but limited seating.

April 4

Presentation of the laureate(s) in Umeå in a conference on children’s culture arranged by the Swedish Arts Council – Choosing the right is large, to choose freely is bigger?

May 26 – June 2

The award week begins on May 26 and includes a visit to Vimmerby, Astrid Lindgren’s birthplace. The laureate(s) participate in a program and meet the Swedish public, press and media. The award week ends with the award ceremony at the Stockholm Concert Hall on June 2.

The 2014 laureate will be announced in Stockholm on March 25!

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award 2014 will be announced on March 25 at the National Library in Stockholm, Sweden.

– Our ambition is constantly to develop our work, says Director Helen Sigeland. We are next year looking forward to announcing the world’s largest award for children’s and young adult literature at the National Library of Sweden.

The announcement will be broadcast live on http://www.alma.se and streamed by link to the international children’s book fair in Bologna, Italy.

– We want to accomplish an interesting and accessible program focusing on the 2014 laureate and the works of Astrid Lindgren, says Helen Sigeland. The National Library keeps the Astrid Lindgren archive, which is on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register since 2005.

The candidates nominated for the 2014 award were presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair on October 10. The list of candidates consists of 238 nominees from 68 countries. The list is available here.

Authors, illustrators, storytellers and reading promoting individuals and organisations may be nominated to the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award.

The award ceremony will take place (as usual) at the Stockholm Concert Hall on June 2, 2014.
