Never violence!

Today, the author David Grossman from Israel will receive the prestigious Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. This reminded us of when Astrid Lindgren received the same award in 1978.

It was at this occasion Astrid Lindgren held her famous speech, commonly known as Niemals Gewalt (Never violence!). In it, Astrid Lindgren speaks up against corporal punishment of children – an idea which was quite controversial in Germany at the time. In fact, the German Publishers and Booksellers Association asked Astrid Lindgren to make some changes to the speech. She refused and let them know that either the speech stays as it is, or she wouldn’t come to Frankfurt at all.

The complete speech (in German) can be read here. And below you’ll find a video about the speech and the controversy it caused.
